THE ban on taking Glenelg spiny freshwater crayfish has been extended until
February 28 next year. Fisheries Victoria scientists have conducted research
that indicates the crayfish, also known as ``prickly backs'', are vulnerable to
over-fishing. The ban prohibits people from taking or attempting to take prickly
backs from Victorian waters. The Department of Primary Industries first
introduced the ban on March 1 last year. It was to expire on March 1 this
year.
